Good morning. Happy Sunday.
This past week I saw two eagles on my way to town. They were in about the same place along the highway, but I saw them on two different days. They both flew over the car as we drove along. One was a Golden Eagle, and the other was a Bald Eagle. It was pretty amazing. One eagle makes me take notice for sure, but two makes me wonder what the spiritual message is.
Eagle medicine is pretty powerful stuff. It puts a person right up there in the spiritual realm, flying higher than material reality.
There is a hill on the way to Taos from up north, where we are, that descends Garrapata Ridge. It is a steep incline, and really scares me in the winter. As we go down the giant hill, I have taken to closing my eyes and pretending I was a bird in flight, sailing down the hill, feeling the wind rush past, and admiring the view from up high. I always picture myself as a Red-tailed Hawk as I descend the hill, which is pretty majestic in and of itself. Sure, I am taking liberties with my fantasy, but it sure feels good to be up there in the sky, flying on the wind, instead of stuck in some fast moving car, fighting an anxiety attack.
I did not connect my Red-tailed Hawk adventure with the Eagles, until I saw the Bald Eagle. Bald Eagles always make me sit up straight and really take notice. They allow me to reconnect with spirit and ask myself what is going on with me in the spiritual realm. I never saw a Bald Eagle until we moved to Taos this time. Then I began to see them here and there...one over near the Earthship we rented...one on the way up to Antonito as we were moving to the farmhouse we are in now.
So, seeing eagles, at least for me, is fairly uncommon and extremely exciting. The question is, what does it all mean?
When I think about animal medicine, I try to take in the immediate feelings I get when a particular animal comes to me or crosses my path. In the case of eagles or hawks, it is always spiritual. I like to use a particular book called Animal-Speak: the Spiritual & Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small by Ted Andrews (published by Llewellyn Publications 2000, copyright 1993 Ted Andrews). This is a great source for me to find out what particular animal totems mean, not only in Native American culture, but in other cultures worldwide and throughout time.
There is a lot of information about eagles and spirituality in Andrew's book, but the gist of it is that eagles come to represent spiritual connection, creativity, healing and working with emotion to better connect to spirit.
Well, this is certainly where I am now, and have been for a while actually, as I try to further my spiritual knowledge, learn more holistic and alternative healing methods, honor my creativity through art, and work through my emotions, which seems to never end. As I go within myself I discover the path to spirit or Source. As I work through my emotional reactions and become the witness to my physical self, I become closer to being one with my higher self/spirit. As I soar above the material world, I gain perspective and learn to see from a higher view, to see the bigger picture and how it is all connected--how I am connected to All That Is.
I enjoy the messages from the Universe, and animals have a way of communicating directly with our spirits, if we take the time to notice and listen.
This week, take special notice of the animals around you. How do they make you feel on a deeper level? A lot of the communication comes from animal totems when you take the time to really feel what the spirit of the animal represents to you. You don't need a book to make the connection, but if you are interested in learning more about animal totems, there are many books available, and possibly available at your local library. The internet is also a great source for research.
Take the time to make connections in your life, not only with friends and family, but with nature. tTe trees, the rivers, the wind, the sky...the animals are all speaking to us on a deep level. Are we willing to listen?
Love to all.
